Australia Launches New Critical Minerals Refining Centre: $53 Million Investment

The Australian Government has awarded $53 million to establish the Critical Metals for Critical Industries (CMCI) CRC, announced 6 March 2026.

The centre will focus on developing and commercialising advanced, sustainable refining technologies for lithium, vanadium, cobalt, rare earths and other high-value critical minerals.

Industry and research partners are co-investing an additional $185 million.

This addresses Australia’s core midstream gap,  moving beyond raw mining to onshore processing and value capture.
